Ralph Gracie has presented a symbolic black belt to Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro…
And the gesture has drawn attention largely because Flávio Bolsonaro has no background in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
This isn’t the first time the Gracie family has extended the honor to the Bolsonaro family.
In October 2018, just before the runoff of Brazil’s presidential election, Robson Gracie – a 9th degree coral belt and son of BJJ founder Carlos Gracie Sr. – awarded an honorary black belt to Jair Bolsonaro, who also had no serious mat experience.
Bolsonaro went on to win the presidency comfortably, and the Gracie family’s connection to his political circle has remained visible in the years since.
In his post, Ralph Gracie framed the new promotion as a continuation of his father’s gesture:
My father, Robson Gracie, symbolically paid this tribute to President Jair Bolsonaro as a gesture of respect and recognition.
Yesterday, I had the honor of continuing that same gesture, symbolically placing the black belt on Senator Flávio Bolsonaro.
He went on to describe the rank in symbolic rather than technical terms:
In Jiu-Jitsu, the black belt goes far beyond technique; it represents values such as discipline, honor, loyalty, and respect.
More than a belt, this was a moment of continuity, tradition, and recognition between two families…In these moments, there is no room for retreat. It’s eye to eye, without masks and without excuses. It’s the window of the soul wide open, revealing who you really are.
There, words are worthless without action. What you say, you do. What you promise, you fulfill.Because it is in times of pressure that character speaks loudest, and the truth of each man comes to the surface.
