Max Holloway is set to face former two-division UFC champion Daniel Cormier in a wrestling match, at his first annual Holloway Foundation Golf Tournament.
The matchup grew out of a lighthearted moment following Holloway’s win over Conor McGregor, when reporters asked him about Cormier beating him in a UFC video game during weigh-ins.
Holloway responded by revealing the two already had a real rematch lined up:
DC is going to come out. He’s one of the guest fighters. And he said he wanted to wrestle. One takedown on the greens.
You guys are going to see me put DC on his fat a*s. Come July 20th.
Asked playfully whether Cormier’s reputation for bending the rules at weigh-ins might carry over to the golf course, Holloway brushed off the concern while making his intentions clear:
He can break all the rules he wants. I don’t care, he’s not winning the grand prize at the end.
I’m going to make sure of that, because I get to pick who wins the grand prize. So he’s not getting it.
Beyond the wrestling match, the tournament is raising money for multiple charitable causes, with a third still being finalized.
One beneficiary is West Side Striking, a non-profit gym in Waianae, Hawaii, where Holloway grew up:
There’s a local gym called Westside Striking. It’s a non-profit foundation. And they are great. They got kids.
I want to support them so much because I’m telling you guys right now, it’s from Waianae, where I’m from.One of my uncles actually helped coach the team. And one of my good friends, he actually is the one that runs everything for them.
So we’re going to donate a bunch of money for them.
Holloway also praised the talent coming out of the gym:
You guys are going to hear one of those kids from that gym in the UFC, or some other organization.
But I’m just happy that I’m actually able to give back to my community in that type of way.These kids are animals, man. They got like multi-Golden Glove champions, Olympian champions.
The tournament’s second beneficiary is the Waianae Boys and Girls Club, an organization Holloway credits with shaping his own upbringing:
They gave me a chance. They always took care of me when I was a kid growing up.
