How We Gorged Ourselves:

Although it probably would have been more sensible to make some of our meals in our kitchen, this was the beach – so we went full-force with the crab cakes and fishies. I can’t say I regret that decision!
Basnight’s Lone Cedar – Of all of the restaurants following the “seafood joint on the water” formula, this one seemed higher-quality than your standard all-you-can-eat shrimp buffet. The food was super fresh, and every item on the menu was listed next to the name of the person who caught it.
Tortuga’s Lie – Just down the Beach Road from our B&B, this was touted as a local favorite and it was jam-packed every time we drove by. My fish tacos were excellent and their fries are legendary; understandably, it’s a must-stop for regular visitors.
The Blue Point - One of the nicer dinner spots in OBX (but still shorts & jeans friendly), we made this our pre-birthday meal. Our pecan pie with bourbon ice cream was on the house, but it would have been worth the price. Yum!
John’s Drive-In – Famous for its dolphin boats (mahi-mahi sandwiches) and milkshakes (the chocolate banana was killer), we indulged in both. My burger was just okay, but the fish felt like an authentic experience.
Blue Moon – Our innkeeper recommended this newish spot, tucked away in a strip mall. High-quality sandwiches, including a delicious cheesesteak and pineapple chicken.
Barefoot Bernie’s - We were excited that this place had New England style clam chowder, since everywhere else, it was made with a spicy clear broth. Although it was a decent casual spot, we wished we had followed a friend’s recommendation to go to the Black Pelican instead. The much-anticipated chowder was full of salty bacon. Normally I embrace bacon in many forms, but blech.
Stop n’ Shop Deli - At this go-to spot for sandwiches, the wait was a bit out of control, but they did have several inventive options, including a surprising variety of gourmet dressings, spreads & salsas. Perfect for grabbing lunch during a mid-day sand break.
