I had a great time reading on the beach in the Outer Banks this past weekend. Until I got to this passage from “The Modern Dog” by Stanley Coren, who the book jacket called “the most consistently popular author of dog books ever”:
It’s also a good idea to avoid names that are too cute. The comedy of calling your dog Fur Face or Butt Head will wear quite thin over the months and years that your dog will be with you. Furthermore, think about whether you really want to be heard loudly calling your dog in a public place when your dog is named “Fuzzykins” or “Noodle.”

I put the book down, stared into the endless Noodle-colored sand, and contemplated the dignity of my name
