I think we can all agree that indoor soccer isn’t the most popular sport out there. It’s not ingrained in the culture, no one played it growing up, there’s no school teams, there’s no professionals to look up to.
Still, the UNC intramural program offers men’s, women’s and co-rec indoor soccer. And within the co-rec division, there’s a competitive and a recreational league.
So imagine my surprise when I saw the playoff bracket for the co-rec, recreational soccer league, and it had 66 teams! That means in one division out of six in a relatively unpopular sport, there’s something like 660 players.
That gives you a sense of how big IM sports are at UNC. Ultimate, kickball, poker, sand volleyball, scavenger hunt — that’s a selection of what’s being offered just in March.
After playing flag football, basketball, street hockey and indoor and outdoor soccer, my first IM sports season at UNC has come to a close. It was a great way to get exercise and let out some aggression, and reason No. 293 why college is awesome.
Duke, by the way, offers just 10 sports total, so in this aspect of college life, UNC comes out ahead. Yes, living in Chapel Hill may be getting to me. Or maybe this post is like Alan Colter on FOX News — now you can’t say we’re biased!

I hope your league resists the urge to expand to 96 teams. Stay true to your roots!
