Academy Award nominees come to campus

By Harold

There’s a really cheap, easy way to see the Academy Award nominees this spring — they’re pretty much all playing at the student union movie theaters at Duke and UNC.

At Duke, movies are anywhere from $0-3 for the general public, while at UNC they’re basically free if you’re easygoing enough — since all UNC students can bring a guest, just introduce yourself to someone as you’re walking to the door.

There will soon come a time when everyone has a home theater system, and except for special gimmicks like 3D, it won’t be worth the hassle to go out and see a movie. But I’m not there yet, plus comedies can actually be more enjoyable when the people you are laughing, not that any of these nominations are particularly funny.

Up in the Air, Invictus, Avatar, Blind Side, A Single Man, An Education, Precious — they’re all at UNC or at Duke these next few weeks.

Duke also has some random events like a midnight showing of The Lovely Bones, which last I checked isn’t exactly a cult sing-along hit like the Rocky Horror Picture Show. And all the proceeds from Sherlock Holmes randomly go to … the Duke Global Medicine Brigades.

There’s no arena seating or THX certified sound, but there is an enthusiastic audience and it’s basically free. And if you don’t like the movie, if you’re at UNC there are pool and ping pong tables in the underground lounge down the stairs, while at Duke the Armadillo Grill taproom on the other side of the building is open until 2 a.m.
