The Best of the Best?

UNC students/future leaders of tomorrow celebrate last year's basketball victory. Can't say I blame them! (Photo credit AP)

This week’s insert in the esteemed Daily Tar Heel included the results from a student survey about local favorites.  These “Carolina’s Finest” categories included trends like favorite reality show (Which, of course, is Jersey Shore…as if there could be another option).  Curious as to where the cool kids hang out and what they’re up to these days, I scanned the list to see where to go & be that weird grad student trying to befriend 18-year olds.  Of note:

  1. The best place to buy music was iTunes.  No other response had been given.  Whatever happened to recording your favorite top 40 hits off the radio, announced by Casey Kasem?   Remember listening to the special dedications, which invariably involved either Luther Vandross or Celine Dion? I guess that was more middle school than undergrad.
  2. The best theme party is P.T. Grille’s ’90′s night.  How do people dress for this?  Are N’Sync songs featured?  And are ’90′s nights are the new ’80′s nights?  Egad!
  3. The best place for a meal after midnight still is, and always will be, Cosmic Cantina.
  4. The winner of “favorite Phys. Ed class” is Walking 101.  Seriously.  Somewhere, undergraduates are getting academic credit for walking.  Granted, I did get credit for my massage therapy and yoga classes, but still.  C’mon!
  5. Best drinking games now include “Circle of Death”.  I don’t know what this is, but it sounds like things have gotten a bit more intense since I was a youngster.
  6. My UNC alum in-laws will be happy to hear that their old residence Granville Towers is still considered to be one of the best places for students to live.  And to fall in love and move to DC and have children who will then provide you with the unmatched joy of having an awesome daughter-in-law somewhere down the road.

Apparently, the college experience also still involves roommate quirks, parking tickets, road trips and doing the crossword in class…key components of a top-tier education, and vital building blocks towards a better future and a brighter tomorrow.  Youth in all its glory!
