If At First You Don’t Succeed, Thai, Thai Again

Ok, I’ll admit that I partially wrote this post because I liked my headline idea. You can’t be an elementary school teacher – or my father’s child – without a healthy appreciation of puns.

But, lest you think that Harold and I are not serious about our love for the level of yummy Thai goodness that we enjoyed in NYC – let us just say that we went out for top-notch Thai food four times in one glorious week during our winter break escape from the South, which, surprisingly, is not best known for its stellar Asian cuisine.

However, lest you feel too sorry for us, we should also note that the North Carolina ethnic food picture is not entirely bleak – thanks to our friend Mark. Upon hearing of our return to the Triangle, he immediately conveyed the following important message:

  1. Congratulations on the move.
  2. Head to Cary for excellent Indian food.
  3. Good news – they do have Thai restaurants here now, too.

This is why we like Mark – he can appreciate our priorities.  (And, Marissa – if you had any doubt that you picked a keeper, let this serve as proof.)

Is it in a strip mall? Yes. But we'll take it. (Photo credit goes to www.yelp.com's reviewers.)

Upon his recommendation, we eagerly gobbled down the goods at Twisted Noodles, which has branches in both Durham and Chapel Hill.  I must say that the service is not ideal, but the place serves its purpose by providing a quick fix that consistently falls into the “not too shabby” category.  Plus, it’s right across from Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods, which are the perfect spots to close out a nice evening on the town with your hubby.  After living in the city, the thrill of loading groceries into a trunk cannot be underestimated.

On nights when we NEED THAI FOOD IMMEDIATELY, we can also head to Thai Palace, which is down the street, and claims to have been serving Triangle customers since 1990.  I find that to be highly improbable based on my memory of local restaurant offerings as an undergraduate, but maybe I was too freshly removed from the wonders of eating out in my rural hometown, and had yet to discover curry.

So, ex-fellow New Yorkers, never fear.  We are stoic.  We are surviving.  And our pursuit of delicious dinners knows no boundaries.  Heck, this weekend, we may even head to Raleigh.
