In a college town, the holidays come early, with each campus group scrambling to cram in performances before finals begin and students head for home. Case in point – Harold spent the last 24 hours listening to jazz, downing hot cocoa at a Christmas tree lighting, checking out the gospel choir at the University Baptist Church, and getting an introduction to the Sugar Plum Fairy. The upcoming calendar is just as packed – on the last day of classes, it’s tradition to go hear the UNC Clef Hangers close out the semester, and the Chapel Hill Philharmonia performs a few days later. I won’t be attending most of these events, since I’ll be (sigh) working, but Harold is becoming the Triangle’s newest Renaissance Man.
Hopefully I’ll be done with exams in time to catch Christmas at the Cradle, which brings together local talent to create a holiday fiesta. Cat’s Cradle was the place where Harold and I would go to hear the Pat McGee Band, a Southern rock group that has a fond place in our hearts, as we went to listen to them soon after meeting each other. That’s why we chose one of their songs for our first dance, even though our super-mean instructor absolutely hated it. (Harold told her he’d burn her a copy of their CD as a parting present. She was less than amused and continued to yell at me for having no rhythm or talent. Unfortunately, she was right.)
And don’t worry – not everything’s about the Christian holiday. We’re also planning to attend the NC Hillel’s Hanukkah party, and just in case Harold’s family is reading, we will absolutely light our menorah and say a prayer each evening… or, at least, go to the “I Latkes A Lot” study break.
Happy “The holidays are almost here - thank God!”, everyone! And I have off for almost a month, starting very soon! Who says there’s no such thing as a miracle?
