With all of the rain we’ve been having, Harold’s desire to get out of the house has increased to the point where “International Folk Dance Lessons” somehow appeared on our iCal for Thursday. (And he went to see former American Idol contestant “Anoop-Dawg” Desai perform a few days earlier. Sorry, hubby, but that’s too awesomely shameful not to mock on the blog.)
Although I’d actually rather do my stats homework then learn folk dance, Harold did convince me to suffer through yet another salsa/swing lesson the night before. I like salsa and swing. I am not good at either. Learning to acknowledge one’s weaknesses is a sign of maturity, right? This time, the instructor gave up and walked away to help another confused couple shuffling back and forth while throwing in an occassional hip sway.
The nice part was that live music was provided by the UNC Jazz Band & Charanga Carolina, and they put on an impressive showing. Several members of the crowd were there just to listen to the music, not wanting to compete with me and Harold on the dance floor. In case you were wondering, “charanga” embodies Cuban and New York-style salsa flavors, which happen to be our area of expertise.
For only $5, this was a worthy evening out, and earns the coveted “Best Deals Under $10″ title from The Daily Triangle. Click here to see a calendar of future events – apparently there’s an entire Jazz Festival on campus in the spring. If we can’t make it to New Orleans, Chapel Hill is clearly the next best place to be.
