In case anyone was wondering why football is more popular than soccer in this country:
The U.S. men’s national team is playing Honduras on Saturday, with the winner advancing to the World Cup. So basically, this is one of the most important soccer games the U.S. has played since the last World Cup, in 2006. And it’s not on television. ESPN, with 100 different networks, isn’t showing it (instead ESPNU has Mississippi Valley State vs. Alcorn State). Channels with soccer in the title, like Fox Soccer Channel, aren’t showing it.
In fact, as this article explains, you have to go to a bar with closed-circuit TV to get the game. The only English-language bar in North Carolina that qualifies is in Charlotte. There actually is a Spanish-language bar nearby that carries the game. And it’s called …. Mi Pegueno Honduras.
So to recap, in order to watch the U.S. play Honduras in a game that might determine who makes the World Cup in 2010, I have to watch in Spanish in a restaurant named after our opponent. I somehow doubt that people in Honduras have to watch the game in English at a place called American Bar and Grill.
