Another horrible Washington loser

by Harold

IMG00112I graduated from elementary school in 1992. And since that time, I have to believe my friends and I have seen more losing from the home team than any other 29-year-olds in the country.

Here’s the tally — Redskins, two playoff wins. Bullets/Wizards, one playoff series win. Orioles/Nationals, two playoff series wins. The best mark was for the Capitals, who made it to the Stanley Cup finals in 1998, and otherwise have just two series wins. So between the four major sports teams, a total of 68 seasons, we have just one team who even made it to the conference finals.

So at this point I have come to expect losing, and can honestly say it doesn’t bother me as much as it used to. All of this is a long introduction to perhaps the most humiliating loss I’ve seen in a long time, the Redskins losing to the historically bad Detroit Lions on Sunday.

I won’t rehash the game because it’s too painful. It was bad on a second level because it ruined what could have been a really cool experience — Laura and I watched the game in a private room at Hi-5 in Raleigh, the official home of the Triangle Redskins Fan Club. Everything on the menu costs $5, the fight song plays after every score, everyone is wearing Redskins gear (my favorite was a grandfather in a Clinton Portis jersey who drank wine and kept saying “give it to me” and pointing to his #26 on every offensive snap)  — it was a perfect setup for watching a game. And now I feel I can never go back because the memories are too painful.

Of course, I’m sure I’ll be back in a few weeks. Misery loves company.

Cal sees the Redskin’s pitiful record, and raises you the fact that they haven’t made it to the Rose Bowl since ’58. Redskin’s at least made the Super Bowl in the last 20 years…
