Classical Mystery Tour

by Laura

It was a who’s who of Raleigh at the North Carolina Symphony last night, and of course, we were in the audience.  The Symphony performed with the cast of Beatlemania, and while this event may not have had traditional classical integrity:

conductor#1 – It was fun.

#2 – I like Beatles music.

#3 – The conductor looked exactly like the band leader on The Simpsons, providing an extra layer of entertainment.

I attempted to take a photo to produce comparison evidence, but unfortunately I was stuck behind the world’s largest head.  Harold kindly switched seats with me during intermission, only to have this dude also switch seats with his wife, placing him in front of me once more.  Sigh!

He was not quite as annoying as the guy next to us, who sung along and wolf whistled at every opportunity.  His favorite thing to do was to count out, “1, 2…1, 2, 3, 4″.  Unfortunately, he was not always in sync with the show.

But, again, super fun, and students can get Symphony tickets for only $10, so we’ll be back.

It’s not Lincoln Center, but we’ll take it!

We also took the opportunity to sample more of Raleigh cuisine at Poole’s. While the food generally got a thumbs up, the atmosphere was a bit… contrived. Essentially, the place is a farm-to-table, only the freshest ingredients, trendy upscale diner. There are red swivel chairs at the bar, where you sit to eat fancy cheese plates and re-conceptualized burgers.  The menu is written on a blackboard, because it changes often.  And, because it gives them an opportunity to write up quirky categories like, “Next To’s”, instead of sides.

But, a fashionable faux-diner is a step forward for Raleigh, people were friendly, and I had some darn excellent squash bisque…so, I will not comment further, except to post this picture of their bathroom:

Lotion bottles with French words, and toiletries in apothecary jars.  The essence of reinvented downtown.
