The Lumina Theater in Southern Village has an outdoor movie every Saturday night over the summer.
Laura and I went our first weekend to see Year One (because Michael Cera’s one-note acting style hasn’t gotten old yet). Actually, the first 20 minutes were pretty funny, until the appearance of a plot killed the comedy.
But that’s not why I’m writing. In New York City, you have to get to the outdoor movies in Manhattan two hours ahead of time to get anywhere near the screen. If you go to the outer boroughs (like Brooklyn Bridge Park), it’s one hour. If you get there at dusk, you’re better off heading straight to Blockbuster if you want to see the movie (is that an outdated reference? Fine, you’re better off Netflixing it or Redboxing it or burning it off a filesharing service).
Anyway, we show up Southern Village an hour ahead of time, and there are about 20 people there — but they’re watching a musical act from the afternoon that was still performing.
People talk about how we’re going to save money moving down South. Well, we’re also going to save a lot of waiting-around time.

Yes, that is very true.
